In a way, I think it also shows Biden’s true colors. He has spent decades branding himself as an “average Joe,” a hard-working good man with integrity. A “non-politician,” if you will. But he really is a crass political operator, just like pretty much everyone else in politics. Biden is someone who is willing to use Abrams more or less as a prop in order to distract people from past actions that are deeply troubling. It’s the same way he responded to criticism about his opposition to desegregated busing, he used “black political leaders” as a shield by saying that he talked with them extensively about the issue and tried to use “black pride” as a defense of his position. He probably thinks that he would only be helping her by giving her this opportunity, without regard for what happens to her career if his gambit falls flat. It’s a cold and calculated maneuver.
